steph: i’ll start here- so, i got a macbook a while back, say, about a year ago. best decision i’ve ever made. well, one day i got my guitar out; yep, my 12 string guitar that only has 6 strings on it because the bridge is about to snap off, and i discovered that magical little program called garageband. so i recorded a little ditty, yes a ditty, because really i only know a handful of chords, as in, about 5. i showed the ditty to a couple friends, recorded a couple more, it was fun. now i’ll start again. karaoke. love watching it, hate partaking in it. that said, i think it only apropos that this is where i met parker. i found him standing all alone against a wall, and i felt bad for him. i, clearly being the more awesome of the two of us, have really good social skills, and something told me that he felt the same way i did about karaoke. it didn’t take long for me to strike up a conversation. i quickly found that not only did we both hate the idea of singing in public, but that we also once hated each other’s high school mascots, come to find out, we had gone to rivaling schools in Colorado. i’ve never seen anyone as shocked as parker was to find this out. nonetheless, true friendship had begun. so, now i’ll start for the last time. i have a recorded song. i have met parker. and, in less than a week of hanging out, it just so happened to be discovered on parker’s part that i liked to occasionally sing things. and just the same, it was discovered on my part that parker, too, enjoyed playing music. that’s when i had the brilliant idea to combine our talents and form a band. second best decision i have ever made. now, all we had to do was get over the fact that we hated singing and playing in front of anyone but ourselves. so, after weeks of singing just above the volume level of a whisper, we found this new endeavor to be quite fun. and on top of that, when we sang loud enough to hear ourselves, we found that we were actually quite good. i never understood it before, but the grass IS always greener on the other side.
parker: there i was, hanging out at a karaoke bar, enjoying myself, when all of a sudden, some girl that i didn’t know came up and started talking to me. i could tell she was nervous and didn’t have a whole lot to say, but she meant well, so i humored her. she quickly ran out of things to talk about, so i had to start asking questions like, “so, where are you from?”, just to avoid that awkward silence. she was astounded to find out we went to rivaling high schools in Colorado. i didn’t think it was that big of a deal. LA becomes a pretty small town after you’ve lived there for a while. her name was steph, and l and b, she was pretty cool for a girl over 6 feet tall. we exchanged numbers. within a week, we started hanging out and one afternoon, she decided to play for me, what she referred to as, “a ditty”. it was good. it was real good. i, too, played music, and we had only known each other for a week, so i knew i could probably steal the song from her and she’d never know. but, instead i came up with an even more brilliant idea, we could start a band. that way the song would be mine anyway. enter, the greener grass. i didn’t really mind singing out loud or in front of people. steph, however, took quite a while to come out of her shell. but, once things got going, songs seemed to flow out of us. i never knew song writing could be as fun as it has been and i couldn’t ask for a better person to play music with. well, i could, but that would just be mean. (enter here: some ironic statement using the title of our band.)
